WHO CAN BE A WRITER?

Can anyone write? How do you know if a particular book or project is worth doing? When, if ever, is it too late to switch careers, or start a new one (maybe in semi-retirement) as a writer? I've been asked these questions a number of times; and it occurs to me that (with some judicious excisions) the following response I sent back to a good friend (whose son was in the dilemma) might be useful.
